Haitung Goodwill Foundation (HGF), Tamenglong was established in 2012 in memory of late Haitung Pame by the dynamic and foresighted children, alongside like-minded individuals of the region with the aim of reaching out to the people of the entire western district of Manipur state, with integrated developmental activities. The society was registered on 20th November 2012 vide Registration No.1040/SR/TD/2012 under the Societies Registration Act, 1989 (Act No.1 of 1990) and got certification from Department of Social Welfare, Govt. of Manipur to run Children Home under Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of children) Act, 2015 on 3rd January 2017 vide Registration No. 9/114/JJA of 2016.
Haitung Goodwill Foundation was established with a vision to help the poor and the needy, provide basic care and education in any capacity possible. It stemmed from a deep concern for those from remote villages who could not continue or afford schooling due to terrible economic conditions of the families. Ever since 2010, efforts have been made in every capacity to support those in need even before HGF was set up.
Since the inception of the Foundation, the society has been taking up many significant activities like career guidance, workshops on RTI, JJ Act, climate change awareness, inter-school quiz competitions, orientation programs for women and youth alike and sports activity etc in the area with the main focus to educate, enable and empower the downtrodden people of the region.
Thus, it began with a hostel for the underprivileged and orphaned students.
Haitung Goodwill Foundation opened the “Suiyi Hostel” with 20 kids in 2014, 32 in 2015, 47 in 2016 and finally took the count further up to 52 kids in 2017. The hostel provided for residential stay for these children with fooding and lodging facilities, completely free of cost while they studied in their choice schools where fees were paid for.
However, with the increase in need and demand for good education among the children who have no facilities or finances to afford studies, there was no more space to accommodate them and continue in a small and compact space. HGF then took this vision further to provide consistent support to the children by setting up a school in April 2018, after much deliberation and discussion.
Named “Holy Angels Academy”, there are presently about 300 children studying from Nursery to 10th grade. The school came into plan upon observation where families were separated for the sake of education in a different town, leaving their villages and families who spend more money to meet their needs.
There is now a need to rebuild these villages and help the families save their hard-earned resources during their schooling years to send the children for further education outside as they grow.
It is a private residential institute established/aegis and managed by Haitung Goodwill Foundation in 2018. It is located in a conducive environment, perfect for quiet and peaceful studies akin to the Himalayas on Christian Principles of education. For the first two years the school had classes from KG to Class VII. Today, the school has been upgraded to High School Level, vide Govt. Of Manipur Secretariat Education-S Department, Order No. 18 of 2021, dated the 22nd November, 2021.
Hence, the school has been established along with all such concerns to bring education to an area in dire need of change and development .
Moreover, setting aside the concerns stated above, the neighbouring villages in and around the school are also given a doorway for employment and a means of earning as well besides comfortably sending their children to this school instead of a far-away place.
Since 2012, the foundation has been taking care of the children in needs especially the orphans and destitute. In 2013, it started with running an orphanage with over 30 children taking care of all their needs including fooding, lodging, schooling etc. it carried on till 2016. However, as the number of children increases it became too expensive to continue running as hostel. All these years the support for running this facilities were supported by the Founder’s family along with some friends from different parts of the world. In 2017, the hostel was closed down to start a new school at Impa village with 100 students. The school “ Holy Angel’s Academy” is now a full fledged high school recognized by the Government of Manipur and in 2021 academic session over 350 students were admitted. The children pays a nominal fee of ₹100 and a residential fee of ₹900, out of these 350 children. 0ver 90 children study for free in the residential facilities with 200 students. The remaining requirement of fund is provided by the founder’s family along with support from friends in different parts of the country.
In 2017-18, under the banner of HGF, activities of Total Sanitation Campaign were carried out in over 30 Villages all over Tamenglong district. It was through this effort that made Tamenglong achieved ODF status in October 2018. During the first wave pandemic, when getting rice was extremely difficult, HGF procured rice from FCI at nominal rate as contributed by the farmers and distributed it to villages in Tamei and Tousem Sub Division.
